December 27, 2011—After Christmas Catch-Up
We haven’t blogged very faithfully because we’ve been busy with Christmas. Things have finally settled down a bit so I’ll hit a few of the high-lights.
Wednesday, December 21, 2001—We left beautiful San Antonio, Texas. We actually stayed in Schertz, TX, which is just north of San Antonio. We very much enjoyed and recommend Stone Creek RV Park. That evening we traveled to Columbus, TX. We have a long standing tradition of giving the girls a night in a hotel as part of their Christmas. This time we decided to get two rooms. I was very reluctant about this and spent most of the night running to the door to check on every sound coming from the hallway. (They didn’t have adjoining rooms. The girls were across the hall from us.) At about 3am, a man approached the girls bedroom and knocked on the door. Barry was out of the room in a flash while I called the front desk. As is turned out, the man was disabled and confused. All was set right but Barry and I hardly slept the rest of the night.
Thursday, December 22, 2001—We arrived at our new RV Park in the Houston area. Houston is huge and we are quite a distance from the city so we feel safe posting our general whereabouts. We set up camp and set off to meet a good friend of ours. She took the girls overnight while Barry and I enjoyed dinner out at Texas Land and Cattle. All I can say is: Wow!! I’ve never had steak that delicious (except for the beef that my Dad raised on the farm, of course). The girls had a great time with our dear friend, being spoiled, making crafts and staying up until 2:45am.
Friday, December 23, 2001—We all went to a Sushi Bar for Lunch! Mmmmmm! Afterwards, Barry and the girls did a little shopping while my friend and I went shopping, ate at a Texas BBQ and got caught up.
Saturday, December 24, 2001—We finally finished our Christmas shopping, cooked our traditional Christmas Eve meal and opened presents. My family is Danish and we have always followed the Danish Christmas traditions. Our friend spent the night with us in the camper.
Sunday, December 25, 2001—We enjoyed attending our friend’s church, visited the Sushi Bar again (not much is open on Christmas day) and then came back to the camper for a long Christmas Day nap!
Monday, December 26, 2001—Even though it was cold and rainy, we enjoyed walking along Buffalo Bayou in downtown Houston. This is a very beautiful, natural area of this huge city. It was strange seeing trees in full Autumn color and roses still in full bloom. Afterwards, we visited the Holocaust Museum Houston. Barry has been to the much bigger Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, MI–near Detroit. He felt that this was much better for Eva being only 10. I greatly appreciated that the more graphic pictures are set-up in a way in which parents can easily steer younger children away. We were fortunate to get in on a tour of the museum. There is so much information that it’s a bit overwhelming and we didn’t have very much time. It was a very sad, incredulous experience but the guide also was good to point out heroic acts of survival and rescue. We left somber but not hopeless.
Tuesday, December 27, 2001—The sun finally made an appearance! I spent a quiet day at the camper taking down Christmas decorations, cleaning, cooking and organizing. Barry was able to spend a lot of time in the office as well. The girls helped me when I needed it, but I gave them most of the day off to enjoy the sunshine!
